Jonathan Adler to Speak at New York International Carpet Show

Designer to Share Journey from Production Potter to Lifestyle Brand

de5501d0-09b5-4b7c-ae93-3b33ea883e38

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA – Before opening 30 stores around the world and designing everything from lighting to furniture to sunglasses, Jonathan Adler was first a pottery-obsessed artisan with an improbable dream to do what he loves.

This September, Jonathan will share his journey as a craftsperson from a production potter to a purveyor of everything you need to add Modern American Glamour to your home. Hear the challenges he faced, his learnings, and his lessons for other makers.

“There’s a beautiful narrative behind skilled craftsmanship that often goes untold in the luxury market,” stated Murtaza Ahmadi, president of New York International Carpet Show. “Jonathan Adler is an inspiring example of what can happen when we truly value impeccable handcrafted process. We need to tell more of these stories to protect the sustainability of handmade goods in an economy that rewards massification. This year, NYICS will amplify the voices of people behind the craft.”

Inside SupaFlat and SupaCut | SupaKitch

Recently, there has been a disproportionate amount of mock outrage cast in the media (social or otherwise) about hunting for sport. We purposely choose the word ‘mock’ because one man, kills one animal and all of sudden we as a society now have the moral authority to judge this man for his actions, all the while ignoring the unpleasantries of dealing with our own lack of morals when it comes to the humane treatment of our fellow man. But, I am digressing very wildly, so in the interest of brevity (and to avoid further opening of this can of worms) suffice it to say that: 1) I do not support hunting for sport, 2) Mob justice is an oxymoron, and 3) What do we do to quench mankind’s thirst for the hunt and the trophies thereof? In answer to that question I propose we give them a placebo of sorts, one that reinforces our machismo as the alpha predator on this planet, one that says unequivocally while thumping our chests that ‘We are the masters of this place!’, we give them: Fabulous handmade rugs in the shape of stylized animals!

Seriously? Yes, seriously. Think about it for just a moment. Mankind has been hunting, both merely to survive and for sport, for millennia. It, coupled with our intelligence (as a whole), is what has propelled us from wherever we began to our current state of technological prowess. Why not proclaim our mastery by using our intellect instead of our might. People who thought fire to be magical and women to be demon possessed witches could hunt but they could not conceive of, design, make, ship around the world, market over the internet, and discuss on a rug and carpet media website in the comfort of your home, car, train, aeroplane, in pyjamas or in a suit, objects that exist solely to be pleasing to the eye (and foot). They could not, but we, we in this time and place can. So we shall, and we do, but that want – perhaps as primal instinct manifest – for the hunt still remains. I surmise this is why we – the more talk about rug types – still have a penchant for animal skin designs. A kind of homage to our past if you will.

A Couturier of Carpets | Jan Kath

I’ve long been a proponent of drawing comparisons between the world of fashion and the world of rugs and carpets; the appeal is simply too irresistible. Iconic fashion houses producing the absolute finest articles of couture clothing with degrees of customization that, to be frank, can at times be envious, contrasted against the monotony of prêt-à-porter and the one-size-fits-some downmarket world of fast fashion; if only the French had a more vulgar sounding word to convey the harshness that comes with producing inexpensive commodity quality clothing. Or do they? I digress.

The comparison is appealing because it is most of all accurate, especially today. Rugs and carpets are available upmarket or down, but with virtually all levels purporting their wares – through whatever advertising means they so fancy – to be some form of penultimate creation eclipsing all others, how is anyone, especially as would be well educated consumers, to discern the authentically couture from the pastiche?

With this in mind you can then rightly assume I was skeptical (and admittedly very intrigued) when news of ‘A Family Affair’ hosted by the self professed ‘couturier for floors’ Jan Kath reached my desk by way of a personal invitation from New York’s Kyle and Kath Showroom. As Kyle Clarkson, partner at Kyle and Kath, told me of the firm’s decision to forgo DOMOTEX and in its stead host an event at their Bochum, Germany homeoffice, my internal monolog was all but pronouncing sarcastically: ‘Scoff, scoff! ‘A Family Affair?’ We’ll see about that!’ And what of the marketing propaganda of Jan Kath espousing couturier as a moniker for the Teutonic carpet house? Should this be believed as well?

Oriental Weavers Makes Significant Capital Investments in US Production and Facilities Expansion

oweaversDALTON, GA – Oriental Weavers, the world’s largest manufacturer of machine-woven rugs, announces significant capital investments in its Dalton, Georgia manufacturing facility. The company just completed installation in March of an exclusive five-meter loom, which is the fastest and most technologically advanced loom in North America. The investment comes on the heels of a similar prominent 5-meter loom installation that occurred during the fourth quarter of 2014 that increased domestic capacity twenty-seven percent in 2015 over the previous year.

The new loom is the fastest machine on the market today and will help the company continue its commitment to growth of its Made in the USA products. The new equipment, thirty-five percent faster than a traditional four-meter loom, gives Oriental Weavers the exclusive ability to more efficiently and rapidly produce domestically made products, all while diminishing waste, eliminating excessive inventory and reducing the amount of energy needed to weave each rug. The growth in domestic weaving production also requires an expansion to the company’s yarn production capacity. In order to increase yarn production and promote energy savings, Oriental Weavers is completing the installation of a new Superba heat-setting yarn line. Using the latest technology, the machine can produce fifty percent more yarn each year than the company’s previous equipment. The new technology is also very environmentally friendly; this state of the art heat-set machine reduces energy consumption by thirty percent.
