 A RUG INSIDER ONLINE EXCLUSIVE

by Michael Christie

Don’t be Coy | ‘Tuft’ by Rug Star

‘RUG STAR TUFT was invented to offer the market a simple message: RUG STAR [hand knotted] in 6 months or RUG STAR TUFT in 6 weeks.’ begins Rug Star’s Jürgen Dahlmanns as we are discussing his new carpet project via email. ‘Of course for both variations we only want to provide the best possible quality and the smartest executions on the market.’ Upon reading this statement I am immediately reminded of the oft referenced ‘Project Management Triangle‘ and how its truisms are somewhat antithetical, though not fully unknown to the world of rugs. Is superior quality the goal? Then be either prepared to wait or to pay accordingly. What if it is needed by the end of next month? Quality and price are now the factors at play. So on and so forth through innumerable variations all trying to account for the one great unknown: the whims of fashionable trend driven consumption. By offering a quality option with appreciably shorter production times, Rug Star is providing the well educated consumer, retailer, and designer yet another means to satisfy these desires, while still embracing and remaining a Rug Star aesthete.

To the Trade: Amongst the various qualities of rugs and carpets available two overarching categories are worthy of note: Handknotted and Tufted. As the name implies, handknotted carpets are made by individually hand tying a piece of yarn to the foundation as it is simultaneously woven producing a strong, durable, and potentially highly detailed carpet. To contrast, a tufted carpet is made by inserting yarn – either by hand or by aid of machine – into a pre-woven foundation cloth. During the process the yarn is trimmed resulting in small ‘tufts’ of yarn, hence the name. Unlike a handknotted carpet which is held together by knots/friction, a tufted carpet is held together by the application of a glue (generally latex) and a backing. The durability of either type of carpet can vary widely depending on the quality of the materials and workmanship.

‘The first two pieces have been produced in 100% viscose, but can also be ordered in the finest 100% Chinese silk or wool.’ continues Jürgen. ‘They arrived in Berlin just this week for product and interior photo shoots before we send them off again, this time to New York.’ RUG STAR TUFT will make its global debut at Rug Star’s inaugural North American showing at the 2016 New York installment of The Rug Show.

Kalaty Rug Corporation Launches Remodeled Website

kalatyweb

HICKSVILLE, NY — Kalaty Rug Corporation has re-launched its website, Kalaty.com, following an extensive remodeling effort. In addition to a cleaner-looking design, the new Kalaty.com conforms more dynamically to various screen sizes, translating into a more efficient and more user-friendly experience.

“In addition to being a showcase for our extensive line of superior-quality handcrafted area rugs, our website should be a useful tool for our dealers and ultimately for consumers,” says Ariel Kalaty, a company spokesperson. “We are always looking at ways to provide our dealers with new-and-improved tools and programs as well as the best possible customer service, and we feel this updated version of our website will help us do this.”

Among the highlights of the new site is that most aspects of the B2B section, which was formerly called KRC WEB, have been integrated into the site to provide users with a more intuitive overall experience. New users can register directly on the site, and all past registrations are still valid.

Metro Market Week 13 Set to Welcome Buyers!

Metro Market Week 2016NEW YORK, NY — As the original fall market experience Metro Market Week continues the same hospitality, attention to personal detail, and enveloping rug and carpet buying experience that has been welcoming buyers since 2004. Held annually in conjunction with two of the industry’s best shows, The Rug Show @ Javits, September 10-13 and The New York International Carpet Show (NYICS), September 11-13 this year’s Metro Market Week runs September 12-15, 2016.

Although the industry and the NY/NJ markets have changed drastically in the last few years, Metro Market Week offers the perfect opportunity to reach out to your favorite wholesalers, be invited into their home showrooms, rather than an off-site facility. This gives the buyer unlimited access to inventory and selection of not only programmed goods, but access to one-of-a-kind and unique pieces at a scale all but unheard of at convention or event space. Simply put: Buyers will see far more rugs than is possible elsewehere.

Buyers can also take advantage of outstanding access to some of the country’s and world’s best rug brands by attending either The Rug Show or NYICS or both! For those makers without home showrooms in NY/NJ region this concentration of superior caliber exhibitors provides all the more reason for, as The Rug Show says: ‘any serious rug and carpet showroom owner’ to attend these shows and Metro Market Week.
