The Chairman | Carpet Design Awards Prelude

By: Michael Christie

This is a truncated version of the article ‘The Chairman’ which appears in its entirety in Rug Insider Winter 2018 | The Nepal Issue, out to subscribers now. To subscribe: Click here!

The winners of the 2018 DOMOTEX Carpet Design Awards (CDAs) will be announced on Saturday, January 13, 2018 in Hannover, Germany. Editor Michael Christie spoke with the Chairman of this year’s Jury, Michael Mandapati — founder of Warp & Weft — about his background, what makes a ‘great carpet’, and how it feels to be judging the work of others.

Michael Christie (RI:) Firstly, I want to say congratulations on being chosen as the Chairman of the Jury this year.

Michael Mandapati (MM): You know Michael… well first, thank you, but as I was saying, when they [the organizers of the Carpet Design Awards which includes DOMOTEX as well as COVER Magazine] first emailed to see if I was interested I thought to myself: ‘Wooooo. What am I getting myself into?’

RI: From my perspective you’re getting yourself into a rare opportunity to award internationally recognized accolades. Obviously you are not going to be able to please everyone with your selections, but then again, is not that distinction what separates great carpets from the crowd? But before you answer that, let’s talk a bit about Michael Mandapati and his background. Most people know you as a maker of very refined Nepali-Tibetan carpets via your firm Warp & Weft, but that’s not where you started is it?

MM: I’ve only ever been in the carpet business. Starting in 1988 while I was still in India and continuing once I moved to the United States in 1989. I was working for other companies of course, Eastern Exports in India, Pasargad and ABC Carpet once I was in the US, but I always new in my heart I would do my own thing. I remember buying a book, ‘The Oriental Carpet’ by P.R.J. Ford and early in the book the author is describing how carpets are made. The warp and the weft… . This is the simplest, truest form, the bones and structure of a carpet. I said ‘That’s it!’ and that’s how ‘Warp & Weft’ got it’s name.

Nourison Launches New Calvin Klein Flat Weave Stripes, Shag, Microfiber and Multi-use Rugs in Atlanta and Las Vegas

ck nourison1

SADDLE BROOK, NJ — Leading floor covering and home accents manufacturer Nourison will introduce new Calvin Klein area rug collections during Atlanta and Las Vegas markets this January.

The area rugs will debut with a fresh look, focusing on primary colors in stripes, bold solids and juxtaposition of color, taking inspiration from Raf Simons, Chief Creative Officer of Calvin Klein, and the look of the new Calvin Klein Madison Avenue flagship designed in collaboration with artist Sterling Ruby.

There are five new area rug collections named after U.S. cities, and designs named after city districts: Nashville wool flat weave stripes, Brooklyn plush shag rugs, LA densely tufted microfiber cut pile rugs in vibrant colors, San Diego cotton flat weave stripes, and Seattle multi-use rugs. Nashville’s designs, 12 South, Music Row, Five Points and SOBRO feature a tribute to America, inspired by a variance in flag designs. Brooklyn’s Greenpoint and LA’s Echo Park rugs create a canvas of saturated color, with a silky, luxurious feel. San Diego’s La Jolla design is inspired by the California sky, with the horizon line over the Pacific. The local outdoors/wilderness area of Seattle’s Pike Place inspires its design.

With an announcement seemingly timed to maximize conversation, hearsay, conjecture, speculation, and above all else buzz, Hannover Fairs USA has on January 6, 2018 announced the debut of DOMOTEX USA to take place February 28 through March 2, 2019 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. ‘Launching DOMOTEX USA in Atlanta makes perfect sense because we can offer industry players across the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast the chance to both visit exhibitors on the show floor and to tour the area’s manufacturing facilities.’ said Raymond Bianchi, Vice President, Events & Business Development at Hannover Fairs USA (HFUSA), the United States’ subsidiary of Deutsche Messe responsible for the organization and management of DOMOTEX USA.

While this move may come as a surprise to many, it is not entirely unexpected. In Rug Insider’s review of the Fall 2018 New York ‘The Rug Show’, there was speculation as to the possibility of such a move; quoting from the article: ‘Even with a degree uncertainty in the market, make no mistake there is a burgeoning global competition for rug buyers by way of trade shows as is evidenced by the growth of not only The Rug Show but Domotex as well. It seems the only questions remaining to be answered are: ‘Would The Rug Show resonate with Europeans should it choose to endeavour that far afield?’ and to extrapolate a logical next step, ‘Would Domotex North America (if it were to come to be) resonate with North Americans?’’
