Some businesses begin with a plan. Others begin with a legacy.

For the founder of Wilmington, NC-based Theseus Rugs, Shane Cibor, the journey started long before the company officially launched. He grew up surrounded by handmade rugs, family traditions and relationships built across con tinents. Rugs have always been more than a business— they’ve been part of everyday life.

“I remember my dad coming home in a Penske box truck, loaded up with bales of rugs from a shipment that he just picked up from the airport. Me and all the kids in the neighborhood would climb around in the back, playing tag. When his business partners would visit from Nepal, we would stay up all night, spending time together, talking and hanging out. Growing up they were just family to me. Being able to continue that relationship means the world to me.”

That connection to Nepal only grew stronger over time. In elementary school, Shane and his classmates designed their very first rug to auction off at the school’s fundraiser. This sparked an early appreciation for the creative process and the impact a thoughtfully designed piece can have – not just on the space but also on the people who buy it. This project is where Shane’s love and appreciation for the design pro cess was born.

As a senior, Shane wanted his senior class service project to be The Phoenix Fund, traveling to Nepal to help deliver clean water and essential supplies to communities affected by a devastating earthquake. The experience offered a deeper understanding of the resilience, craftsmanship, and generosity of the people behind the rugs.

Shane’s hands-on approach includes trips to manufacturers in Nepal to oversee production.

These trips transformed a childhood connection into a life long commitment. He wanted not only to preserve the art istry of handmade rugs, but also to support the communities and relationships that make them possible.

Today, Theseus Rugs blends decades of industry experience with a fresh perspective, helping clients create everything from warm, welcoming homes to unforgettable commercial spaces. Every rug represents more than exceptional design; it reflects a story of heritage, connection, and continuity.

The idea for Theseus Rugs was born in 2024 and officially launched in 2025.

While discussing the new venture over dinner with family friends, the conversation turned to the company’s deep roots in the rug industry and its vision for the future.

Their guests, avid readers of classical literature, immediately recognized a connection to the ancient philosophical thought experiment known as the Ship of Theseus Paradox.

The question asks: If a ship is gradually rebuilt piece by piece, does it remain the same ship? For Theseus Rugs, the answer lies in honoring a rich family heritage while embracing innovation, new ideas, and a mod ern approach to design and service.

The company carries forward the values and relationships built over generations while creating something entirely its own.
